TV Airing of THE ACE OF HEARTS On Sunday, September 6th, TCM will present The Ace of Hearts, featuring Vivek Maddala's 74-minute orchestral score, recorded with the Hollywood Studio Symphony Orchestra.

Soundtrack Award Nomination and TV Airing of WILD ORANGES
Vivek's 90-minute orchestral score for the film Wild Oranges has been nominated for three 2009 JPF Awards in the categories: BEST SOUNDTRACK ALBUM (for Wild Oranges: Motion Picture Soundtrack 2-CD set) and BEST SOUNDTRACK "SONG" (for "Main Title" and for "Chase Fugue"). The score was performed by the renowned Third Angle New Music Ensemble -- a versatile chamber orchestra featuring members of the Oregon Symphony and the group Pink Martini -- conducted by Vivek Maddala.
Additionally, Turner Classic Movies will air the film on Sunday, September 20th.

Vivek has been co-writing and co-producing music with recording artist Wendy Starland for her new album, slated for release later this year. Named "VH1's Best Emerging Artist," Wendy's vocals were featured on Moby's recent album Last Night, and she has performed live with countless artists including Shawn Colvin, Jonatha Brooke, and Maceo Parker. Vivek was in Park City in January for the Sundance Film Festival, where his music score for the film They Turned Our Desert Into Fire was in competition at the Park City Film Music Festival. Vivek's score took home the Gold Medal, Audience Choice Award, for best music in the documentary feature category. The music for They Turned Our Desert Into Fire fuses North African percussion with wistful strings, woodwinds, and vocals, to illuminate the film's story of the ongoing genocide in Darfur. In additional news, after having won the Best Documentary award at the São Paulo International Film Festival, the film won the "Best Feature - Human Rights" award at the Artivist Film Festival and has been picked up for worldwide distribution by DER.
Vivek has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Society of Composers and Lyricists (SCL), the premiere organization for coordinating and advancing the interests of professional composers, songwriters, and lyricists. In his role on the Board, Vivek will be serving on the Legislative and Partners committees and will work to foster open examination of, and solutions to, many challenges facing the film and TV music community.

Additionally, Vivek will be working with a distinguished group of creative advisors, including composers Carter Burwell (No Country for Old Men, Adaptation), Tyler Bates (300, Californication), George S. Clinton (The Love Guru, Austin Powers trilogy), Alex Wurman (March of the Penguins), and Ed Shearmur (Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow).

The stage play, More Perfect Union, containing sound design and music elements by Vivek Maddala, is concluding its two-week run at the Pacific Resident Theatre in Venice.
The performance uses Barack Obama's speech in Philadelphia and Reverend Jeremiah Wright's press conference at the National Press Club as starting points to examine race, history, politics, foreign policy, religion, and reconciliation in today's America. Vivek attended the Sundance Film Festival in January, where two of his music scores were in competition at the Park City Film Music Festival. The Warner Bros/TCM film Wild Oranges, featuring Vivek's 90-minute symphonic score, won a gold medal in the category "Best Music in a Feature Film." His score for Grasshopper, starring James Franco and Rachel Miner, won a gold medal / audience favorite award for "Best Music in a Short Film."
Earlier this month, the documentary film, They Turned Our Desert Into Fire, featuring Vivek Maddala’s music score, had its US premiere at the Sarasota Film Festival. This came on the heels of the film's world premiere at the São Paulo Film Festival, where it won the International Jury Award for Best Documentary. The music for They Turned Our Desert Into Fire fuses North African percussion with wistful strings, woodwinds, vocals, and a hint of electronica, to illuminate the film's story of the ongoing genocide in Darfur. The carefully crafted score weaves together a wide range of themes and instrumentation, creating a music soundtrack that has been described as "an exquisite jewel" and "...tender, melancholic, and infectious." The score combines evocative North African and Western musical textures to illuminate the film's story of the ongoing genocide in Darfur, Sudan. You can hear excerpts of the music score here.
In August, Vivek completed the score for the indie feature film Whispers from Poland, starring Joanna Nimierska and Alfred Garcia. Filmed both in Krakow and in the Western US, Whispers depicts an immigrant love story of joy and pain, growth and loss. The music score is quiet and brooding, spanning influences from two continents. Orchestral strings fuse with classical guitar and piano to create a melodic amalgam -- with hints of Central European Mazurka and 1950s American jazz. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for information on the film's premiere.
In October, Sony Pictures will release the film Ice Spiders on DVD. The movie features a high-energy action music score by Vivek Maddala (in collaboration with Penka Kouneva). The movie stars Patrick Muldoon (Starship Troopers), Vanessa Williams (Cold Case, Soul Food), and Thomas Calabro (Nip/Tuck, Melrose Place). It made its television premiere on the SciFi Channel in June. The DVD will be available at all major retail outlets on October 16th. Renamed Cold Snap, the movie stars Patrick Muldoon (Starship Troopers), Vanessa Williams (Cold Case, Soul Food), and Thomas Calabro (Nip/Tuck, Melrose Place). It's scheduled to air on the SciFi Channel in June.

In late January, Vivek completed his score for the film Walking Tall, directed by Danielle Lurie. The film was part of the Elevate Film Festival and is slated to air on Current TV.

Presently, Vivek is composing the score for the documentary feature, They Turned Our Desert into Fire (2007), directed by Mark Brecke. Mark is a San Francisco-based photographer who travels to conflict regions documenting some of the world’s worst atrocities; accordingly, the subject of this film is the genocide in Darfur. The film is currently in post production, but you can hear exclusive excerpts from the score here.
Vivek has begun collaborating with Penka Kouneva on the score for the action/suspense/thriller flick Ice Spiders (2007), for the SciFi Channel. Stay tuned for details on this project in the coming weeks.

In August, Vivek completed the score for the film Grasshopper, starring James Franco (Spiderman, Annapolis, Tristan + Isolde) and Rachel Miner (The Black Dahlia, CSI, Bully, Sex and the City). Grasshopper marks Vivek’s second collaboration with director Eric Kmetz. The film will tour the festival circuit in the coming months.

Earlier this year, Vivek composed a music score for Portland at Play -- an entertaining and informative DVD by made by film makers Tony Barbon and Robyn Taylor Barbon, of Folklore Media. Portland at Play won a 2006 Telly Award for outstanding film production.

In June, Vivek completed his second orchestral score for director Xiaojin Bao -- a follow-up to the sophisticated animation Moon Chasing. The new film, Mother, is a sweeter, more poignant tale of nature, control, and unintended consequences.

Warner Bros. and TCM Archives are premiering the long-awaited Lon Chaney Collection, a two-DVD set showcasing The Ace of Hearts along with two other Chaney films; additionally, the release contains bonus features including the behind-the-scenes documentary of Vivek's creation of the music score. 31 October 2001 Vivek Maddala is signing a deal with Turner Entertainment/Warner Bros. to compose the musical score for two films: The Mysterious Lady, an MGM silent drama starring Greta Garbo; The Flag, an MGM short dealing with the American Revolution. 9 March 2001 The Guitar Center is running a series of interviews with Vivek Maddala, available exclusively on their web site. The Guitar Center is also featuring the 7-minute edit of the TCM documentary for the Young Film Composers Competition. The documentary includes interviews and footage of Vivek Maddala at work on the score for The Ace of Hearts. On Sunday, January 7th, Turner Classic Movies will air The Ace of Hearts, featuring Vivek's orchestral score. The movie will air at 9 PM Pacific Time.
