Soundtrack Award Nomination and TV Airing of WILD ORANGES

Vivek's 90-minute orchestral score for the film Wild Oranges has been nominated for three 2009 JPF Awards in the categories: BEST SOUNDTRACK ALBUM (for Wild Oranges: Motion Picture Soundtrack 2-CD set) and BEST SOUNDTRACK "SONG" (for "Main Title" and for "Chase Fugue").

The score was performed by the renowned Third Angle New Music Ensemble -- a versatile chamber orchestra featuring members of the Oregon Symphony and the group Pink Martini -- conducted by Vivek Maddala.

Additionally, Turner Classic Movies will air the film on Sunday, September 20th.

Vivek has been commissioned to compose the music score for an upcoming film titled A Journey in My Mother's Footsteps, directed by Dina Rosenmeier (act. Fuel, Daredevil) and edited by Nadia Fugazza (Secretary, Beautiful Ohio). The feature-length documentary, filmed in two continents and spanning three decades, follows Jessie Rosenmeier's work as an activist in India and her daughter's resulting personal struggle and transformation. The music combines Carnatic, Hindustani, and Western idioms to create an amalgam that is both wistful and ebullient. Look for the film to premiere at festivals starting Fall 2009.

Vivek has been co-writing and co-producing music with recording artist Wendy Starland for her new album, slated for release later this year. Named "VH1's Best Emerging Artist," Wendy's vocals were featured on Moby's recent album Last Night, and she has performed live with countless artists including Shawn Colvin, Jonatha Brooke, and Maceo Parker.

Vivek was in Park City in January for the Sundance Film Festival, where his music score for the film They Turned Our Desert Into Fire was in competition at the Park City Film Music Festival. Vivek's score took home the Gold Medal, Audience Choice Award, for best music in the documentary feature category.

The music for They Turned Our Desert Into Fire fuses North African percussion with wistful strings, woodwinds, and vocals, to illuminate the film's story of the ongoing genocide in Darfur. You can hear excerpts from the score (and view clips) here.

Vivek has been awarded a 2008 Sundance Fellowship for film music composition and will be participating in the Institute's creative lab this summer. As a Sundance Fellow, Vivek will be collaborating with writer/director Moon Molson on his feature film Meadowlandz, and on a documentary feature headed to next year's film festival.

Additionally, Vivek will be working with a distinguished group of creative advisors, including composers Carter Burwell (No Country for Old Men, Adaptation), Tyler Bates (300, Californication), George S. Clinton (The Love Guru, Austin Powers trilogy), Alex Wurman (March of the Penguins), and Ed Shearmur (Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow).

In early May, the BodyVox modern ballet Horizontal Leanings, featuring Vivek's music score performed live by the Third Angle New Music Ensemble, played to packed houses during the 5-night premiere at the Center for the Performing Arts in Portland, OR. Now the entire music score will be released on CD in October, coinciding with the start of the dance company's 2008-2009 season.

Earlier this year, Vivek was commissioned by the internationally renowned dance company BodyVox to compose the music for their modern ballet, Horizontal Leanings. The work explores diverse themes, such as community survival and cultural identity, while contrasting the fragmented world of friction and alienation with a cohesive world of collective effort. The production fuses innovative choreography with Vivek’s postmodern music compositions, and will premiere to live audiences beginning May of 2008.

This came on the heels of the film's world premiere at the São Paulo Film Festival, where it won the International Jury Award for Best Documentary.

The music for They Turned Our Desert Into Fire fuses North African percussion with wistful strings, woodwinds, vocals, and a hint of electronica, to illuminate the film's story of the ongoing genocide in Darfur. It is currently touring the film festival circuit is expected to air on television in the coming year.

Vivek Maddala's music score for the AFI film Grasshopper has been nominated by the Film & TV Music Academy in the category Best Score for a Student Film. Starring James Franco (Spiderman, In the Valley of Elah) and Rachel Miner (The Black Dahlia, CSI, Sex and the City), the film tells the dramatic story of two people whose lives intersect for an evening, only to be changed forever by a tragic event.

The carefully crafted score weaves together a wide range of themes and instrumentation, creating a music soundtrack that has been described as "an exquisite jewel" and "...tender, melancholic, and infectious." You can hear a couple of excerpts from the score (featuring vocalist Kathy Bailey) here.

The Film & TV Music Awards are the first peer awards for the Film & TV Music Industry, where the focus is on the quality of the music to the film. Learn more about the awards here.

The feature film, They Turned Our Desert Into Fire, featuring Vivek Maddala’s music score, will have its world premiere at the São Paulo International Film Festival in Brazil (October 21st - November 1st).

In October, Sony Pictures will release the film Ice Spiders on DVD. The movie features a high-energy action music score by Vivek Maddala (in collaboration with Penka Kouneva).

The movie stars Patrick Muldoon (Starship Troopers), Vanessa Williams (Cold Case, Soul Food), and Thomas Calabro (Nip/Tuck, Melrose Place). It made its television premiere on the SciFi Channel in June.

Earlier this year, Vivek composed a music score for Portland at Play -- an entertaining and informative DVD by made by film makers Tony Barbon and Robyn Taylor Barbon, of Folklore Media. Portland at Play won a 2006 Telly Award for outstanding film production.

• In September, Vivek produced and wrote music for a new album by Jane Beck, featuring the Tibetan artist Kelsang Chukie Tethong. The music blends elements of traditional Chinese music with Indian raga and Western orchestra -- combined with modern electronic textures. The yet-to-be-titled CD will be release later this year by PBC Music, and will receive international distribution next year. Stay tuned for updates.

• In March, Vivek completed the music score for the animated film Catch Up -- his third collaboration with director Xiaojin Bao. The movie had its premiere screening on June 10th at UCLA. You can hear an excerpt from the score here.

• Currently, Vivek is slated to compose the score for the documentary feature, They Turned Our Desert into Fire (2007), directed by Mark Brecke. Mark is a San Francisco-based photographer who travels to conflict regions documenting some of the world’s worst atrocities; accordingly, the subject of this film is the genocide in Darfur. In June, Vivek completed his second orchestral score for director Xiaojin Bao -- a follow-up to the sophisticated animation Moon Chasing. The new film, Mother, is a sweeter, more poignant tale of nature, control, and unintended consequences.

• In late August Vivek signed a deal to compose a new 90-minute score for the King Vidor film Wild Oranges. Commissioned by Turner Classic Movies, the score will mark Vivek’s second major “collaboration” with the renowned Golden-Age director. Check back for periodic updates.

In April, Vivek completed his orchestral score for the animated film,
Moon Chasing. Directed by Xiaojin Bao, this charming film depicts the interaction of a personified moon and sun, engaging in a playful courting ritual.

In late March, Vivek completed his score for the tragic romance,
Omar & Fiona, directed by Eric Kmetz for the American Film Institute. The score combines orchestral and electronic elements in a unique amalgam and marks a departure from Vivek's usual acoustic-based sound.

• The film, Gidoo's Cosmic Crisis, featuring Vivek's collaboration with saxophonist George Brooks, has been garnering attention at many film festivals around the US. Look for it at a festival near you!

• Vivek began work in February on the score for an Alfred Hitchcock feature film from 1927, titled The Ring. Commissioned by Turner Classic Movies, this boxing saga has never been shown to modern audiences and features an early glimpse into Hitchock's genius in directing. • In February, Vivek signed a composition and production deal with Video Helper, a music production company in NYC. For this commission, Vivek is combining Western-world symphonic orchestra with musical constructs from South Asia and the Pacific Rim. For the first time, the film The Ace of Hearts is available on DVD. It features Vivek Maddala's acclaimed 74-minute orchestral score, composed and recorded during the summer of 2000.

Warner Bros. and TCM Archives are premiering the long-awaited Lon Chaney Collection, a two-DVD set showcasing The Ace of Hearts along with two other Chaney films; additionally, the release contains bonus features including the behind-the-scenes documentary of Vivek's creation of the music score.

• In July, Vivek composed and orchestrated music to accompany an action scene from the film, Charlie's Angels, for the ASCAP film scoring program in Los Angeles. Aptly titled "Helicopter Fight," the cue was performed by the all-star Sandy De Crescent orchestra featuring Endre Granat (concertmaster), conducted by Vivek Maddala, and recorded at the 20th-Century Fox scoring stage. • Also in July, Vivek completed his score for the independent film, Equation, planned for the festival circuit in the coming months. Vivek Maddala is signing a deal with Turner Entertainment/Warner Bros. to compose the musical score for two films: The Mysterious Lady, an MGM silent drama starring Greta Garbo; The Flag, an MGM short dealing with the American Revolution. Vivek's music can be heard on the new issue of the Film Music Compilation CD, Volume 10, distributed by Film Music Publications. It will premiere at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, TX March 9th through March 17th.

Look for the Film and Television Music Compilation CD, Volume 9, featuring music by Vivek Maddala. The CD is distributed by Film Music Publications and will be introduced at the Sundance Film Festival (January 18-28).

On Sunday, January 7th, Turner Classic Movies will air The Ace of Hearts, featuring Vivek's orchestral score. The movie will air at 9 PM Pacific Time. Please check your local listings for additional show times.

Just before the movie, TCM will air the 7-minute edit of the documentary featuring Vivek. So begin watching at about 8:50 PM (Pacific)!
